Old Electric Log Advisor OEA
The Old Electric Log Advisor can help produce reliable results for wells from oil and gas fields which only have pre-1960 old electric logs. The program is designed to provide a simple and straight forward approach to interpreting these logs with confidence. The program can be used with minimum log curves: spontaneous potential, lateral log, and short and long normal resistivity curves. If other curves are available (gamma ray, neutron, gamma gamma density, and microresistivity), these curves are also utilized by OEA. In a typical analysis, the user loads an ASCII file, enters or computes water resistivity, computes clay volume from the spontaneous potential log, estimates true resistivity from the lateral log and short and long normal resistivity curves, views crossplots to help predict hydrocarbon presence, computes water saturation, and determines net pay from user-specified cutoffs for clay volume, porosity, and water saturation. ON-screen instructions and OEA's simple menu structure allow the user to quickly perform an interpretation. Technical notes compiled by Dr. George Asquith, a world renown well logging expert, are available throughout the program to give insight into models, calculations, and crossplots. Since the lateral log is affected by bed thickness and resistive beds above and below the zone of interest, OEA uses a query system to determine which depths of the lateral log are valid and which lateral log rules are appropriate for computing true resistivity. For depths with invalid lateral log values, the short and long normal curves are used to estimate Rt. Once Rt has been computed, the curves are displayed in a "modern format" of SP or GR, three resistivity curves, porosity, and microresistivity curve, if available. Even with limited log curve, crossplots can aid users in discerning potential hydrocarbon bearing zones. OEA provides several useful crossplots including the Q-Plot with indicates producibility of shaly sands, Sw-Archie vs. Sw-ratio, Porosity derived from Resistivity Curves vs. Total Porosity, and Dew Plot which indicates hydrocarbon presence. Water saturation is computed from Archie's Equation, the Ratio Method, Dual Water-No Porosity, and Automatic Compensation-No Porosity. The final net pay screen summarizes all results of the analysis. OEA offers users a stepwise approach to interpreting old electric logs. The program is designed to offer users checks between calculations and crossplots to obtain the most reliable results.
