Overview
Powerful Precision 2D and 3D Mapping
Autodesk Map® 3D 2005 software combines the proven productivity of 2D
with new 3D functionality. Designed for mapping technicians,
planners, utility managers, designers, and cartographers, Autodesk
Map 3D software is the foundation of your complete infrastructure
management solution.
Better 2D Mapping
Take advantage of enhanced interoperability with other Autodesk and
competitive GIS products. Built on the AutoCAD® 2005 software
foundation, Autodesk Map 3D offers full DWG compatibility and can
import and export designs and data in a wide range of formats. A new
display manager and powerful thematic mapping capabilities greatly
improve performance. And with a new and enhanced API, you can
customize Autodesk Map 3D to create applications that meet specific
business needs.
The Fastest Autodesk Map Release Yet
Get your work done more quickly. Faster than Autodesk Map 2004 or
2000i, this newest version of Autodesk Map software saves time when
you’re querying GIS data, using thematic mapping functionality, and
more. Now you can make the most of accelerated performance for
commonly used functions, improving your productivity.
Work Smarter with 3D Surfaces
Visualize, analyze, and share your 3D design and spatial data with
information that is always up to date. Create 2D and 3D
representations of surfaces to confirm surface conditions. Any
change to the data sources immediately updates the surface. Other
features include the following:
- Work with points to create representations of surfaces.
- Generate 3D surfaces and record precise spatial information.
- Read text or database files to generate points.
- Group points based on values you define, such as description,
elevation range, and graphical selection.
- Add, edit, or remove points to quickly update surfaces.
- Analyze data, view thematic displays, see watershed
delineations, subtract one surface from another, and smooth
surfaces.
- Create 2D and 3D representations of surfaces, including
contours, surface triangles, elevation and slope thematic, surface
face direction, watershed areas, and grid and slope arrows.
Improved Data Integration
Take advantage of enhanced interoperability with other Autodesk and
competitive GIS products. Built on the AutoCAD® 2005 software
foundation, Autodesk Map 3D software offers full DWG compatibility
and can import and export both designs and data in a wide range of
formats. With this level of interoperability you can
- Import and export LandXML data to streamline workflow.
- Create DWF™ (Design Web Format™) files that include your
Autodesk Map data so you can share data more easily with team
members.
- Use the FME Import-Export engine to exchange data with other
industry-standard GIS formats, including ARC/INFO® coverages and
E00, ArcView® Shape, MapInfo® MIF/MID, and MicroStation® DGN
(including V8, GML 2, Ordnance Survey MasterMap, VPF, and SDTS).
- Store and access geospatial data in one central data source,
Oracle® Spatial. Plus, Autodesk Map 3D offers Feature Data Object
functionality so you can store your map objects and attributes
using a familiar interface.
Develop Customized Applications
With the new and enhanced API, you can customize the software to create
applications that run on top of Autodesk Map software and meet
specific business needs.

Features
New—Autodesk Map® 3D software offers faster
precision mapping, improved data analysis, and new customization
capabilities, including the following
Large Number of Points
Use points to generate 3D surface models and record precise
spatial information pertaining to land use, land coverage, and asset
information. Generate points from existing text and database files
to reduce errors and improve productivity.
Flexible Point Groups
Group points based on values you define, such as description,
description key, elevation range, and graphical selection. Use
groups to define the graphical appearance of points and point labels
in the drawing and to create surfaces.
Smarter 3D Surfaces
When you add data to a surface, edit the data, or remove data
points, the software automatically updates the surface. You can
create TIN, Grid, TIN Volume, or Grid Volume surface types.
Quick Surface Analysis
Analyze surface characteristics with information that is always
up to date. Use a variety of analysis functions, such as thematic
displays, watershed delineation, subtraction of one surface from
another, and surface smoothing.
Surface Visualization
Confirm surface conditions and communicate information to
colleagues by creating 2D and 3D representations of surfaces,
including contours, surface triangles, elevation and slope thematic,
surface face direction, watershed areas, and grid and slope arrows.
Support for LandXML
With a standard data format for civil engineering and surveying
project data such as points and terrain models, LandXML helps you
integrate as-built data into your mapping system, maintain existing
boundaries, and exchange data with contractors and project team
members.
Display Management
Manage the style and the order in which entities are displayed.
Zoom in on specific areas of interest to simplify working with large
data sets distributed over large geographic regions. Now it’s easier
to focus on the data rather than on how to query and display the
information you need.
Thematic Mapping Enhancements
Enhanced thematic mapping offers greater flexibility and makes
the software easier to learn and use. Use it to perform queries from
the current drawing or from attached drawings and expand the number
of alterable properties, including plot style and lineweight.
Import/Export Enhancements
The powerful FME Import-Export engine enables you to exchange
data with other industry-standard GIS and mapping formats, providing
interoperability with all major GIS software. You’ll be able to
access more data sources and integrate the data more effectively in
your project. These sources include ARC/INFO® coverages and E00,
ArcView® Shape, MapInfo® MIF/MID, and MicroStation® DGN, including
V8, GML 2, Ordnance Survey MasterMap, VPF, and SDTS.
Design Web Format™ (DWF™) Files
Create DWF™ (Design Web Format™) files to share mapping data easily
among team members. When you publish Autodesk Map object data,
database links, and feature classification names in a DWF file, you
have complete control over the specific information to be included.
Feature Data Object (FDO)
Feature Data Object provider is a new way to store your maps in a
central, external geographical data store, such as Oracle® Spatial.
You can store your map objects and attributes using a familiar
interface (similar to the Oracle Spatial OSE feature). FDO uses data
providers to connect to spatial data, giving the Autodesk Map
application the capability of connecting many different data
formats, not just Oracle Spatial. This release of Autodesk Map 3D
software comes with an Oracle Spatial data provider.
Improved API
Extend functionality with an improved API to create specific
applications that run on top of Autodesk Map 3D 2005. Use ObjectARX®
API to address annotation, classification, display management,
import/export, topology, points, point groups and surfaces.
